Zirconia Crowns
What are Zirconia Crowns?
Zirconia crowns are incredibly durable and can withstand a lot of force and daily pressure. This makes them a wonderful restorative option for your child’s smile. If your child’s tooth has broken, cracked or has become severely decayed, we may recommend covering it with a zirconia crown. These crowns mimic the feel and look of your child’s natural teeth, and they help to improve oral functionality.
Why are Zirconia Crowns needed?
There are a few reasons for why your child might need or would benefit from zirconia crowns. If their tooth has cracked, broken or fractured, we may recommend removing the damaged portion and placing a crown. Likewise, a crown might be necessary if a tooth has a large area of decay where a filling would no longer be sufficient to restore it to its original size and shape. Zirconia crowns are long-lasting, and your child can expect to have the crown in place for many years.
What makes your child a candidate for Zirconia Crowns?
To determine if a zirconia crown is necessary, we will examine their teeth. This can help us to identify any teeth that may need to be crowned. If your child needs a crown, it is best for them to come in for treatment right away. This can help to prevent the damage to the tooth from getting worse.
What happens during the procedure for Zirconia Crowns?
The procedure to place a zirconia crown involves administering sedation or local anesthetic. We then file away any damaged part of the tooth. For permanent teeth, we will take impressions to make a custom-fit zirconia crown. For primary (baby) teeth, we will place a pre-fabricated zirconia crown that will be trimmed and adjusted to fit the area. Your child should brush and floss around the crown as they would any other tooth. The crown is expected to stay in place for many years with the proper care and oral hygiene.
