Wisdom Teeth Removal

What is Wisdom Teeth Removal?

Wisdom teeth normally begin to develop around the time your teen is roughly 17 years old. Unfortunately, if your child doesn’t have enough room for these third molars to come in, they will become impacted. If your child has impacted wisdom teeth or needs to have these teeth removed prior to orthodontic treatment, we are able to offer comfortable wisdom tooth removal. Wisdom tooth removal is quick, easy and done in our relaxed, kid-friendly office.

Why might Wisdom Teeth Removal be needed?

If impacted wisdom teeth are left behind, they can eventually cause the surrounding teeth to shift and become crowded. They may even begin to become inflamed and infected, which can have an impact on underlying bone. In severe cases, the wisdom teeth can push against the surrounding teeth and cause serious damage. This is why it is important to have these teeth removed as soon as feasibly possible.

Who is a candidate for Wisdom Teeth Removal?

To determine if your teen needs to have their wisdom teeth removed, we can perform an exam and take x-rays. The x-rays taken allow us to see if the wisdom teeth are impacted and their exact positioning. If your child needs to have their wisdom teeth removed, it is best to have them come in for treatment sooner rather than later. This is especially true if they are going to be undergoing orthodontic care.

What happens during Wisdom Teeth Removal?

The procedure begins with sedation that helps to relax your child and put them into a sleep-like state. We then make an incision through the gums to gain access to the underlying wisdom tooth. The tooth is removed and sutures placed to close the gums. We then work on another wisdom tooth in the same manner. Your child can expect some minor pain and swelling for the first few days. The procedure is relatively easy and can be highly beneficial to your child’s future dental health.
