Sedation Dentistry for Children
What is Sedation Dentistry for Children?
Sedation is ideal for children who are either undergoing more invasive procedures or who show fear and anxiety when visiting the office. Having a fear or phobia of the dental office is completely normal, especially if your child has had a bad experience in another practice. We offer oral, IV as well as nitrous oxide (laughing gas) sedation to fit your child’s needs. Sedation is safe and easy for kids and teens of all ages, and we monitor it throughout your child’s appointment.
Why might Sedation Dentistry for Children be needed?
The reason your child might need or want sedation is because they are having a hard time sitting still for treatment. They might show signs of severe anxiety or panic attacks before and during their appointment. We might even recommend sedation if your child is undergoing a complex procedure, like oral surgery. Because we offer several different types of sedation, it is easy to find the one that is right for your children.
Who is a candidate for Sedation Dentistry for Children?
Most children who require sedation when visiting the office can have it safely administered. We will go over your child’s health and medical history to determine if sedatives are right for them. We will even determine when and if sedation is needed. Along with sedation, we use a variety of calming and relaxing methods to help make their time with us more comfortable.
What happens during Sedation Dentistry for Children?
For nitrous oxide sedation, we will place a small mask over your child’s nose. They will breathe in a sweet-smelling gas that puts them into a deeply relaxed and stress-free state. We then perform the procedure as needed and remove the mask. The effects of nitrous oxide wear off quickly after the mask has been removed. We offer IV sedation for patients undergoing more complex procedures, like surgeries. Oral sedation is a small pill your child will take prior to their appointment. We safely administer and monitor the sedation while they are in the office with us.
