Dental Crowns for Children

What are Dental Crowns for Children?

A dental crown is a type of restoration that is used to completely cover a damaged tooth. For some children, a baby tooth or permanent tooth might be so decayed, broken or fractured that a crown is necessary. Dental crowns can be placed over both primary (baby) teeth as well as permanent teeth. Most crowns are long-lasting and can help to restore the beauty and functionality of your child’s smile.

Why would Dental Crowns be needed?

The most common reasons for a child needing a crown include severe decay or damage. Your child might have broken or cracked one of their teeth, and there is no other way to save the tooth than to essentially cover it with a ceramic crown. If there is extensive decay in the tooth, we may suggest removing the decay and placing a crown rather than a filling. Crowns are helpful in restoring the look of your child’s smile while simultaneously improving oral functioning.

What makes your child a good candidate for Dental Crowns?

To determine if your child might need a dental crown, we can examine their teeth. If your child has extensive decay, we may recommend either removing the tooth fully or placing a crown over it after the decay has been removed. For older children and teens, they can expect to have a permanent crown that will last them for decades with the proper care.

What can be expected during the Dental Crowns procedure?

The crown procedure is relatively straightforward. We first numb the area of your child’s mouth receiving treatment. We file away any decay and create a small “seat” for the new crown to sit. For permanent crowns, impressions are taken and used to craft a custom-made restoration. The crown is then placed at a later time and adjusted as needed. For crowns designed to cover primary (baby) teeth, we will select a pre-fabricated crown in our office and place it over the tooth. We adjust its fit and bite so that your child can experience a comfortable, durable restoration.
