Dental X-rays

What are Dental X-rays?

Dental x-rays allow us to see below the surface of your child’s smile. It can be downright impossible to spot certain conditions with just an exam alone. For kids, having x-rays enables us to monitor growth and development of underlying permanent teeth. X-rays are safe and are often necessary for kids of all ages.

Why would Dental X-rays be needed?

We might recommend having x-rays done during checkup visits or if they are a new patient. X-rays are typically needed prior to oral surgery and before orthodontic treatment begins. We may take individual intraoral x-rays as well as a panoramic x-ray, which is a larger film that allows us to see your child’s entire mouth. X-rays are essential for your child’s preventative oral healthcare routine.

Who is a candidate for Dental X-rays?

Because we use the latest technology available, x-rays are considered safe and beneficial for your child. We will always let you know when and if your child needs to have x-rays taken. We take all precautions before and during the radiation process to keep your child safe. We will go over your child’s health and medical history to ensure that they are healthy enough to have x-rays taken.

What can be expected during the Dental X-ray process?

The x-ray process begins by draping a lead apron over your child’s body. This helps to keep them safe during the x-ray process. We then position a small appliance inside of their mouth. The x-ray machine is aimed directly at this device and the image is taken. The process is repeated for all other necessary x-rays, and we will review the images as soon as they are taken. By having x-rays taken, we are able to provide your child with better care because we are able to see any and all problems that are happening just below the surface of their smile.
